The IDD (Instructional Design and Development) department
has begun an Online Teaching Institute. It is dedicated to developing faculty skills at online
teaching. They have a blog, and wiki, and will be doing online courses.
Also, we (SNL Online) are in the process of developing a training course
for our online faculty. It will cover:
*
A section on technology (Blackboard, Campus Connect, our email,
etc.)
*
A section on DePaul, SNL, the structure of the SNL program and
teaching to competence
*
A section on teaching online (may be taught by IDD's Online
Teaching Institute) -- focusing on guiding discussion, communication,
etc.
*
A section on preparing one's online course.
Also, the Instructional Technology and Development (ITD) department,
which is a part of IS, has many trainings for faculty on using
Blackboard, Clicker, Podcasting, and other technologies. Those trainings
are only available in-person.
We also send faculty notice of workshops and classes offered by IDD and
various DePaul offices such as Jodi Cressman's, Rafaela Wefner's (I
don't know the names of the offices, just the people). These include
Quality Matters training (offered last month); Assessing Learning
online; and various other trainings. Sometimes they bring people in, and
sometimes they do it web-enabled. Most of these are only available
in-person, too. IDD probably co-sponsors 3-6 trainings per year.
We also address issues of teaching online in the SNL Faculty Development
Days -- at least the past 2, since I was invited to participate. We've
had between 30 minutes and 2 hours (sometimes in breakout groups)
focusing on online teaching issues, such as Dealing with Difficult
Students, etc. We make those available to remote participants by using
videoconferencing and email, and sometimes a phone bridge.
I also held a Brown Bag on leading discussion, and had (and have!) great
plans for more faculty development. I hope to be able to get back to
that, especially through a mentoring system and community of practice
discussion spaces. I suspect it will take me another year to actually
get that going, between the technology issues, marketing issues, and
graduate program issues that are taking most of my attention now.
Luckily, IDD is doing a great job of creating an online community!
