Context
4 year college of liberal arts, is an independent Catholic college for women in Wisconsin. However it is mixed gender as states it offers undergrad and grad programs for women and men.

Interesting Practices relating to Faculty Development:
  1. Alverno college has as its mission an element (the element is referred to as 'Creating relationships with higher education') that invites constructive criticism from colleagues as to their teaching, scholarly, and research activitiy. It would be interesting to find out whether they do this formally or adhoc because it relates to development of faculty in a very 'open' way.
  2. Website has an area reporting faculty achievements.
  3. Also within the mission, is the element of 'Creating a community of Learning', in which is stated that 'expectations regarding learning and development hold for faculty and staff as well as for students'. It is through a community of learning they consider will keep the institution on track for serving all the institutional members.
  4. Scholarship - three faculty and staff (William Rickards, senior research associate in educational research and evaluation; and Zohreh Emami and Tim Riordan, associate deans for academic affairs) .contibuted to 'On becoming a productive university'. This book considers faculty development in one of its approaches so it will be of interest to read and contact the contributors to discuss faculty development.
  5. There is the Alverno College Institute for Educational Outreach. Faculty offer workshops, seminars, and a consultation service to educators from k-12 through higher ed. EG a week long seminar entitled 'Connecting Student Learning OUtcomes to Teaching, Assessment, & Curriculum.
