Academic Administration

Current Position: Director of Curriculum and Instructional Design, Center for Distance Learning, Previously Coordinator of Instructional Design and Curriculum Development. October 2002-Present
Empire State College, State University of New York, Saratoga Springs, NY. http://www.esc.edu

Primary Responsibilities:

Primary responsibility for academic quality of the center curriculum at both the macro (programmatic) and micro (course) levels.
I provide visionary leadership, advice and guidance on the development of guidelines, research initiatives, pedagogical best practices, and the review of proposals in instructional design and curriculum development for Center for Distance Learning courses (350 + courses taught in multiple sections). As co-chair of the curriculum committee, I provide oversight for the development and review of new courses and program requirements, as well as revisions to the existing curriculum. I supervise the Curriculum and Instructional Design staff, and direct the activities of course development teams (45-70 teams per cycle for 2 cycles per year). This position requires daily consultation and coordination with faculty area coordinators (department chairs) as well as adjunct faculty course developers. In addition, I consult regularly with the dean, center directors, and the Vice President for Educational Technology on environmental scanning, recommendations for future projects and innovations, and next generation research. I participate in a center research group (with rotating chair) engaged in practice-based research focused on pedagogy, cognition, interactivity design, immersive learning environments, and mediated learning.

A few of my accomplishments during my incumbency in this position:
    1. I have spearheaded the development of baseline standards, criteria, and new models for courses, as well as the creation and implementation of plans, policies, processes and strategies for a successful growth in scale and quality (from approximately 5 courses developed per term to 70 or more per term).
    2. In collaboration with Dr. Susan Oaks, the Center for Distance Learning Faculty Chair, I conceived and developed a web-based CourseTrak system, which is Knowledge Management system. The CourseTrak is an integrated planning & tracking database for course development, review, revision, and evaluation, designed to integrate information for area coordinators, instructional designers, and support staff; create a record for the entire development cycle of a course; foster collaboration; and facilitate course evaluation & review. Dr. Oaks and I have presented on the system at local and international conferences .
    3. In addition to the system and instrument design for the system, I designed the new course models, new processes, course development procedures, standards, course categories, review process, evaluation process (and instrument) course resource needs analysis process (and instrument), team development approach, new course documents, and summative evaluation reporting, which have been applied to 300 courses between March 2003 and March 2005, all under my direct supervision.
    4. I am currently leading a national project to revise the national fire services baccalaureate curriculum, in collaboration with the National Fire Academy (US Fire Administration, Department of Homeland Security) and a consortia of seven universities from across the country. This project has required my attendance at a series of meetings at the National Emergency Training Center near Washington, D. C.
