Discussion Area: How Do We Measure Up?

Fred Luthans et al (Organizational Behavior, 2002) created a theoretical framework of a learning organization for business, based on Chris Argyris’ work in double-loop learning and Senge’s generative learning, as well as through a comprehensive review of the available literature on learning organizations. The framework is divided into three essential characteristics: tension, systems, and culture. I have included some of the common characteristics for each.

I. Presence of TensionII. Systems ThinkingIII. A Culture of Facilitating Learning
  • Creative Tension (Senge) – a catalyst, a motivation to learn
  • A gap between vision and reality – because the vision is continually being reviewed and adjusted
  • Questioning/Inquiry
  • Challenging the status quo
  • Critical reflection
  • Shared vision
  • Holistic thinking
  • Openness
    • Suggestions
    • Teamwork
    • Empowerment
    • Empathy

Question1: How does Empire State College measure up to this list? Do some characteristics fit? Do others not?

Question2: Look at these characteristics again. Does this list remind you at all of the mentoring practices at Empire State College?
