Do We Have a Learning Organization at Empire State College?

Many of you have heard a number of people in the college talk and write about learning organizations. I would like to give us an opportunity to engage in a discussion about that topic as it applies to our college. This conversation is for everyone, no matter what your duties at the college – faculty, professional employees, support staff, and administrators. A learning organization includes everyone in the organization – if everyone isn’t involved, the results are not very useful.

Below you will find one definition. There are many. I have also included links to more information and a discussion area with some starter questions for us to consider.

What is a Learning Organization?

According to Peter Senge (one of the first to coin the term ‘learning organization’ in 1990) a learning organization is “a place where people are continually discovering how they create their reality. And how they can change it.”

Creating/Building/Developing a learning organization is not an event. It is a continuous process of improvement. An organization never actually finishes the process, because it must be ongoing.
