Philosophy of Teaching/Mentoring
At Empire State College the faculty do not teach. We engage in an activity called mentoring. Mentoring involves advising, instructing, developing resources, individualizing learning, assessing, evaluating, and in general facilitating learning for our students. It is important to me as an educator for people to learn how to learn and to enjoy the activity of learning. This Empire State College mentoring combines comfortably with my philosophy.
At Empire State College I have the ability to help students tailor studies and programs that will benefit their individual style of learning and their needs. "As I have found through my studies, research, and experiences each person has the ability to learn but may have been unsuccessful at some point in his or her life.Very often this can be directly related to how the educational material was presented and how the student learns." | "I see mentoring as a means that allows me to help students gain the best educational experiences available. A mentor has the responsibility to engage in these activities and to individualize these activities for each student." |
