FILLS GEN ED REQUIREMENT IN AMERICAN HISTORY

This study explores issues, themes and interpretations of U.S. history, from the end of the Civil War in 1865 to the late 20th century. It examines in a general and introductory way the historical forces [i.e. industrialization, mass immigration, modernization] that have shaped changing gender and race relations, social reform, economic development, technological transformation, territorial expansion and American imperialism. This study also addresses the ways that history has been “created” by people through “communities,” or networks of shared kinship, friendship, values and “memories,” that is, through conscious attempts to commemorate and memorialize the past.
