This study group will meet every week for 12 weeks beginning Tuesday, September 9, 2008 through Tuesday, December 2, 2008 from 4—6 PM. I can be reached at 646-230-1207, Monday morning, Tuesday afternoon and Thursday afternoon. The best way to reach me is via email. This is an advanced level, liberal arts course. It meets the SUNY Gen Ed requirements for social science, area #3, and partial credit for area #10, Basic Communication.

ASSIGNMENT SCHEDULE: (Assignments should be finished by the dates noted below). POST ONE WRITTEN QUESTION ON THE READING EACH WEEK TO BE USED AS THE BASIS FOR GROUP DISCUSSION. (Keep a rolling list of these questions as it will be collected at the end of the study as part of your evaluation)

This study will use the college's online communication platform, the Angel system. Your first assignment is to take the Angel tutorial for students by going to www.esc.edu/ole and clicking on the student tutorial. Students will be submitting weekly questions on the reading through the Angel platform. These questions will form the basis for in-class discussion. You are responsible for reading your classmates questions each week and incorporating as much as possible into your weekly group discussion. You are not required to discuss each others questions online, only to read them and keep them in mind for the group meetings.

Class 1: Overview and structure of the study; Crises in our lives
Assignment: Share with your classmates what aspect of crisis intervention interest you.
            Begin to think about what aspect of crisis intervention you would like to work on for your final paper, which will be done in crisis teams.
            The last twenty minutes of every class will be devoted to crisis teamwork
Class 2: September 11 and The 6-Step model of Crisis Intervention
Assignment: James and Gilliland, Chapters 1 and 2
Be prepared to take an in-class test on the 6 step model
Turn in a written account of your experience on September 11
Class 3: The Triage Assessment System – the ABCs of mental health triage
Assignment: Chapter 3;
      Begin reading An Unquiet Mind
          Bring to the study group a written paragraph describing your final paper. Include a title, your hypothesis and three or four references written in APA style. Include the names of the members of your team and the name of the team leader. The position of team leader comes with extra credit (and extra work!).
Class 4: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
Assignment: Chapter 4
BE PREPARED AT ALL TIMES FOR POP QUIZ ON 6 STEP MODEL
Class 5: The Crisis of Lethality
Assisgnment: Chapter 5;
          Turn in a 1 page critical book review of An Unquiet Mind
Start reading I am not Sick
Class 6: Sexual Assault, Partner Violence
Assignment: Chapters 6 and 7
      Each team will turn in a reference section for its topic area WRITTEN IN APA STYLE
Class 7: The Crisis of Addiction
Assignment: Chapter 8
Class 8: Personal Loss and Bereavement
Assignment: Chapter 9
Class 9: The Crisis of Mental Illness
Assignment: Complete Amador and Jamison reading;
Turn in critical book review of I am not Sick!
Class 10: Hostage Negotiation
Assignment: Chapter 12
Class 11: Culminating Activity – Hostage takeover simulation
Assignment: Work on final papers
Class 12: Helping the Helpers
Assignment: Chapter 13
Each team will turn in one copy of the final paper
Each student will turn in a reflective commentary on the study group
Each student will hand in page of the 11 questions (one on each chapter/week of the study group)
