Grammar Help in Writing DPR

HINTS FOR DEGREE PROGRAM PLANNING

The degree program and all the essays should be carefully proofed. Use spell check before submission to the mentor, but double-check the spelling since spell check makes mistakes! The mentor will do the final review and approval before you submit the portfolio.

Here are a few grammar guidelines to follow.

Capitalization:

    • Capitalize a degree title when it refers to the specific degree, for example, Associate in Arts in X (or Science in X), Bachelor of Arts in X (or Science in X).
    • Do not capitalize a general reference to a degree or subject area, for example, an associate degree, a bachelor’s degree. “I am getting a bachelor’s degree,” vs. “I am getting a Bachelor of Science in Psychology.”
    • Capitalize proper nouns and official job titles, for example, “I plan to be a manager in human resources,” vs. “My title is Manager of Human Resources.”
    • Capitalize the area of study, the concentration title, and specific course titles, for example, Community and Human Services, Counseling the Disabled, Personality Development, Women in Literature.
    • Do not capitalize a general reference to a discipline or subject (unless it is a language), for example, “I plan to take a workshop in literature,” vs. “I will study Spanish literature.”

Formatting:
    • Be sure to include your name and all other pertinent information.
    • Do not use abbreviations for any subjects, titles, names of colleges, etc.
    • Use a regular typeface (Times New Roman, Ariel, etc.), 12 point type and double space the lines (do not skip extra lines between paragraphs and indent the first word of every new paragraph). Use standard margins and number the pages.
    • Put your name, degree program, and rationale (note the spelling), at the top of the first page (title: Degree Program Rationale).
