Empire State College

What is a Learning Contract?

Learning Contracts at Empire replace the syllabus at a traditional college. Many studies for credit here are guided independent study; that is, the student meets or conferences with the supervising faculty and together they work out the details of what the student will do during the term to learn about the topic of study. Many mentors can suggest particular readings and activities, but the student should have a part in the determination of what is agreed as a course of study for a given topic. In the learning contract, a broad outline of the student's agreed activities and demonstrations of learning appears, along with a description of how the work will be evaluated for credit. If you have questions about learning contracts, contact me by e-mail.
