B. LEARNING ACTIVITIES - Objectives

  • To understand and articulate the following educational and philosophical concepts: a college education, an educated person, a liberal education, education as transformation.
  • To assess and articulate one’s own educational and professional goals, assets, and needs.
  • To identify approaches to gain learning and skills that remain before goals can be met.
  • To learn and apply the guidelines and requirements of the college and its parent university system by creating documents—a proposed program of college study and general education grid—that are ready for review by the assigned faculty on the Degree Program Committee (DPC).
  • To develop a proposed degree program outline of 64 (Associates) or 128 (Bachelor’s) semester credits (or both) that follows and meets the guidelines and requirements of an identified Area of Study and the prerequisites for any intended advanced credentials or admission to advanced studies, such as graduate school, certification examinations, or external occupational requirements.
  • To complete and submit a written rationale essay explaining your educational background, goals, self-assessment, and your reasoned choices for meeting needs toward goals and requirements, including identification of any proposed credit for learning outside college. Your rationale essay should also reflect your understanding of what a college education is and how you view its relevance and value for you individually.
  • To complete a written document that indicates the basis for and how you will structure any proposed credit by evaluation. (The length and detail will vary by student.)
