Educational Planning: Where to get information for your plan
IDEAS ON WHERE TO GET INFORMATION ON EDUCATION NEEDS
- Interviews with professionals and others knowledgeable and working in the field of your interest, or very recently retired from the field.
- Site visits (with prior permission) to observe in the work settings of interest to you. You should plan on four in person consultations with others at minimum.
- Career outlook reference books in college libraries and public libraries.
- Web sites with college catalogs that list all the requirements and electives for similar degree programs (always look at several to get an idea of the generally agreed upon requirements of a field of study).
- Admissions staff of graduate schools, national professional associations giving certification exams, or employers regarding prerequisites of particular occupations or graduate programs.
- General introductory college handbooks on a specific field of interest (for example, human services, helping professions, criminal justice field, arts management, jobs for people with sociology degrees).
- Web sites with similar career information (many colleges also have information about the careers their graduates go on to attain).
